{"id":1,"date":"2019-12-19T21:38:16","date_gmt":"2019-12-19T21:38:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.theyboldlywent.com\/trekbooks\/?p=1"},"modified":"2020-01-13T16:14:20","modified_gmt":"2020-01-13T16:14:20","slug":"the-human-adventure-starts-here","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theyboldlywent.com\/trekbooks\/2019\/12\/the-human-adventure-starts-here\/","title":{"rendered":"The human adventure starts here."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theyboldlywent.com\/trekbooks\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/trekbookstack-1024x825.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-16\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The other day, I decided that I needed a new project in 2020, and that it should have three core concepts:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>It should be fun.<\/li><li>It should keep me away from screens a bit.<\/li><li>It should help me write again.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Soon after, I thought:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>I read a vintage <em>Star Trek<\/em> novel a while back and really enjoyed it, but didn&#8217;t really have a platform to discuss it.<\/li><li>I have a whole lot of vintage <em>Star Trek<\/em> novels that I should read or re-read.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>So here we go, a retrospective of the Pocket Books <em>Star Trek<\/em> publishing phenomenon of the 80s, starting with <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2PCgM9x\">Gene Roddenberry&#8217;s novelization of <em>Star Trek: The Motion Picture<\/em> <\/a>(published in late 1979, but it&#8217;d be weird to skip it) through <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2PD1r8K\">Julia Ecklar&#8217;s <em>The Kobayashi Maru<\/em> <\/a>(published in December 1989.)  This will include the other film novelizations as well as the &#8220;Giant&#8221; novels written by Vonda N. McIntyre, Diane Carey, Diane Duane, and Margaret Wander-Bonnano.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(And before you ask: yes, this will be oriented around Kirk and crew; I think <em>The Next Generation<\/em> is fine, but I wanted to focus on the part of the franchise I was most knowledgeable and passionate about.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m excited to go through these again, just to answer a few questions. Are there some hidden gems worth consideration beyond the franchise? Can I tell which ones are retooled spec novels?
